Tips For Remote Job Interviews From Our West Lake Houston Apartments

If you’re one of the many workers looking to find a new job during what some are calling “The Great Resignation,” you can likely expect your job interviews to be conducted over a video call from home in your West Lake Houston apartment. Even when (or perhaps we should say “if”) the world returns to normal and in-person interviews once again become the norm, a video interview is often a first-round option employers use to narrow down their list of candidates before the final round of interviewing, so it’s worth brushing up on your virtual interview dos and don’t as you prepare for your job search.

Even if you’ve done plenty of interviews in your time, video interviews are a unique challenge with their own tips and tricks you can use. Keep reading to see our tips for remote interviews, and if you know a friend or neighbor at our Redemption Square apartments who could use these tips, don’t forget to share this post with them!

Dress The Part

On a phone interview, nobody will know if you are taking the call in your pajamas. But with a video interview, you can’t take the risk of being business up top and casual on the bottom. Wear what you would if you were taking the interview in person to avoid risking it. In fact, dressing up a little for any type of interview is a common tip to help you feel more confident and put you in the right mindset.

Maintain Eye Contact

This is a point to remember for any interview you participate in, but it’s especially important to keep in mind during a virtual interview. Between the camera, the screen, your notes, your pets, and so on, it can be easy to get distracted and lose eye contact.

  • Prior to your interview, close any windows or programs that might be distracting. This will help eliminate any notifications from popping up and causing you to lose focus.
  • Don’t stare at the camera, just pretend it’s not there. Keep your attention on the people you’re talking to. Remember, it’s just a conversation.

Be Prepared

With a virtual interview, you don’t have to worry about the stress of driving to an office or dealing with parking. However, there are still a few other things you will need to keep in mind while preparing for the call.

  • Make sure you have any necessary video conferencing programs downloaded and log in ahead of time. This will ensure everything is ready to go when your interview time rolls around.
  • Check your lighting! The last thing you want is to look like a ghost or be barely visible in the frame. Turning off a light or opening a window can make all the difference.
  • Choose a neutral location or backdrop. Check that everything that might be in the background is clean and organized.

People can make a lot of assumptions about you depending on your background, even if they’re aren’t aware they’re doing it, so take special care with this aspect of your preparation! You may opt for one of the standard background images that programs like Google Meet and Zoom provide, or you may blur your background, but it’s often wise to have a neat and tidy scene behind you in real life just in case. If your Redemption Square apartment is in need of sprucing, you can always plan to do your interview in our Private Conference Room in the High-Tech Business Center right here at 255 Assay!
